  • M*A*S*H Actor David Ogden Stiers Dead At 75

Actor David Ogden Stiers, best remembered for his Emmy-nominated role as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III in the classic TV series M*A*S*H, died Saturday at the age of 75.

Emmy Award-winning actor David Ogden Stiers has died at his OR home, following a battle with bladder cancer.

"His talent was only surpassed by his heart", he wrote to his 438 followers. This came from how the Winchester character was written, but also largely from Stiers' performance as the upper-crust, well-spoken, erudite Bostonian, a performance that earned him two Emmy nominations.

David got his start in acting in 1971 with a role in George Lucas' sci-fi thriller film THX 1138.

Stiers was also known for the eight Perry Mason TV movies he made between 1986-88 in which his prosecuting attorney invariably lost to Raymond Burr's Mason, and more recently he had recurred on the USA Network series "The Dead Zone" from 2002-07 as the Rev. Eugene Purdy, the chief antagonist to star Anthony Michael Hall's Johnny Smith.

"The Majestic" cast member David Ogden Stiers is pictured with the film's star, Jim Carey, center, and the film's director/producer Frank Darabont, left, at the premiere of the film in Los Angeles, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001. "He was an extraordinary person, a gifted actor, phenomenal musician, and my sweet, dear shy friend, who kiddingly called me Letitia".

In addition to playing the aristocratic Maj.

An avid classical music fan, he was a resident conductor for the Newport Symphony in OR and guest conducted orchestras around the country in dozens of productions. He told ABC News at the time that he had hidden his sexuality for a long time because so much of his income had been derived from family-friendly programming.
