  • Metropolitan Opera fires James Levine after finding 'credible evidence' of sexual abuse

James Levine, a towering figure on the American music scene who spent 46 years at the head of the New York Metropolitan Opera, was sacked on Monday after an investigation found evidence of sexual abuse and harassment. In light of the findings, the Met concludes that it would be inappropriate and impossible for Mr. Levine to continue to work at the Met. That move effectively fires Levine from two posts, as the Met's music director emeritus and artistic director of its young artist program.

The investigation also found that members of the Board of Directors and the management has been involved in covering up rumors and accusations of sexual assault made against Levine throughout his tenure at the Met. Brown, who went on to play principal bass in the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, said that one night in the dorms, Levine had masturbated him and asked him to reciprocate - and then punished Brown when he declined to do so again, ignoring him for the rest of the summer, even when he was conducting him. Charles Dutoit, the former music director of the Orchestre de Montreal and a prominent guest conductor around the globe, has also been alleged to be a perpetrator. Days later, another man told The Times that Levine had also abused him when he was in his 20s.

He will be too busy handling the fallout from the company's firing Monday evening of its longtime conductor James Levine over sexual harassment charges. According to the Met's most recent statement, more than 70 people were interviewed in the investigation, which was led by Robert J. Cleary of the law firm Proskauer Rose.

Levine has not been charged with any criminal offense. Many of his performances were televised by PBS, and singers would rearrange their schedules to appear in his performances or to audition for him. He frequently conducted at the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Bayreuth festival and Salzburg festival.

Levine started conducting from a chair in late 2001 and tremors in his left arm and leg became noticeable a few years later.

The Met said it was ending the honorary position of music director emeritus for Levine, who retired in 2016 but until the scandal had still been a frequent presence as a conductor. "Such commitment to the future is essential if the institution wishes to attract the world's finest musicians, several of whom have already departed due to wage cuts, among other workplace issues". So maybe this was the boot the Metropolitan Opera secretly wanted.
