  • The schoolgirls who were abducted Boko Haram were taken to meet the president hours after being returned to the town of Dapchi this week

At least one of the freed girls has said a Christian classmate remained captive, while those released are Muslim.

In a statement Thursday, Buhari's office said, "The administration will not relent in efforts to bring Leah Sharibu safely back home to her parents as it has done for the other girls after she was held back by the terrorists over her decision, as reported, not to convert from Christianity to Islam". Five of them were said to have died on the day of the abduction due to their being jam-packed in lorries.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who received the girls in Abuja last Friday, pledged to ensure Leah Sharibu's return and we urge all actors not to jeopardise her return through uncalled for actions and utterances.

The 105 schoolgirls arrived Dapchi at about 2:30 p.m. after leaving Abuja on Sunday morning.

"President Buhari put this in perspective when he said the response of his Administration is a marked departure from the attitude of the preceding administration in the aftermath of the kidnap of the 276 Chibok girls in 2014".

President Issoufou has since returned to his country after the late night meeting with president Buhari.

On Saturday, multiple sources told TheCable that the insurgents were on their way to Dapchi with the girl.

He said he had earlier planned to visit Dapchi as part of his on the spot assessment of deployment of personnel to schools in the north-east but cut off the visit to soften the ground on hearing that the schoolgirl was on her way back to Dapchi.

Their kidnapping in the town of Dapchi hit Buhari politically by undermining his claims a year before an election to have ended Boko Haram's almost decade-long insurgency.

A source told TheCable that the insurgents took the girl to a neighbouring village from where the military is expected to bring her back to the town she was kidnapped from.

The Dapchi students were released following "painstaking, backchannel dialogue with their abductors", said Director-General of State Services, Lawal Daura.

He said that no stone was left unturned to secure the prompt release of the girls.

"While parents of Dapchi girls rejoice because of the reunion with their children, I want to appeal to the Chibok community never to lose hope or despair", he said.

And it was an elated President who addressed the girls and the nation pledging his government's determination to avoid a repeat of this whole incident.
