The U.S. embassy in Mexico City updated its security alert for Mexico yesterday, saying the office will remain closed until further notice after officials "received information about a security threat".

The news comes after an explosion occurred February 21 on a ferry connecting Playa del Carmen with the town of Cozumel, which injured 26 people, the Associated Press reported. An alert posted last week barred employees from taking ferries between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel Island.

Responding to the alert, the local governor's office said USA visitors remain welcome in the state of Quintana Roo and Mexico as a whole.

"Effective immediately, U.S. Government employees are prohibited from traveling to Playa del Carmen until further notice", the security alert states.

Playa del Carmen and other tourist regions have seen a surge in violence in recent months.

"U.S. citizens have been the victims of violent crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery in various Mexican states", the advisory said.

"All tourism and economic activity in Playa del Carmen continues in a normal manner", the state government said, according to the Associated Press.

Still, Americans were not told to avoid travel to Playa del Carmen.

"Mexico is by far the most popular sun destination among our clients but, of course, if someone is feeling uncomfortable travelling anywhere, we can always find them somewhere else to go", Wallace said. The explosion injured more than 20 individuals, including tourists.

While these groups don't usually target tourists, the advisory says "armed clashes" between criminals and security forces can occur without warning and Canadians could be "caught in the crossfire".

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City has issued a security alert for a popular tourist destination. That incident came about a week after an explosive device detonated on another ferry, injuring several passengers. "We encourage travelers to be aware of surroundings and exercise caution", Nauert said Wednesday night.
