Violence has been on the rise as Afghan security forces struggle against a surge in attacks by anti-government fighters since the drawdown of foreign forces over the past three years.

Afghan Ministry of interior (MoI) said on Monday that security forces have retaken control of parts of Anar Dara district in Farah province that fell to the Taliban on Monday morning. He added that the casualty numbers could rise battle was still intense.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after it began, according to a media statement from Qari Yusouf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman.

Another attack was carried out in the province's capital of Farah, six police officers were killed in the assault.

On March 10, officials said dozens of people were killed after Taliban militants ambushed Afghan security forces in the Bala Buluk district, sparking an hours-long gunbattle.

Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil, with government forces fighting the continuing Taliban insurgency.

Saturday's attack came ahead of an expected increase in fighting with the end of winter and the approach of spring.
