Miley Cyrus has been slapped with a multi-million dollar lawsuit from a Jamaican reggae singer who claims the pop star ripped off his signature track in her smash hit single "We Can't Stop".

Singer Miley Cyrus performs during the 2018 MusiCares Person of the Year show honoring Fleetwood Mac at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, New York, U.S., January 26, 2018.

In Cyrus's song, the lyrics in one of the choruses are: "And we can't stop/And we won't stop/We run things, things don't run we/Don't take nothing from nobody/Yeah, yeah".

The suit goes on to claim that "We Can't Stop" came at a time when Cyrus was trying to reinvent herself as "edgy", and that her album Bangerz is filled with traces of urban and Caribbean sound. Flourgon used that same line on his 1988 dancehall single "We Run Things", which was a #1 hit in Jamaica. "Things no run we", a phrase May claims to have coined.

In the court documents, May notes he won "formal copyright protection" in November with the US Copyright Office for all musical arrangements in his song.

Flougron may have a case after he won "formal copyright protection" from the USA copyright office for all musical arrangements in "We Run Things" last November.

Representatives for both Miley and Sony are yet to respond to their request for comment. May also is aiming to halt performance and distribution of "We Can't Stop", and seeking a trial by jury for the case.

"We Can't Stop" never reached No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100.
