Twitter wants to open verification to everyone

  • You get a blue tick! And you get a blue tick

Correct! Twitter paused its verification program back in November - the application form has since been taken down - when it verified controversial accounts, one of which belonging to the man who organized the alt-right rally in Charlottesville.

Twitter's CEO says more people will have access to verification, but the verification process is going to roll out in sequences so that the company can put more focus on what they think are the most significant issues around verification, starting with U.S. elections.

The social networking platform's chief executive said Thursday that the verification process is "very broken" in part because some people have seen the badge as an endorsement from the company rather than as an identity verification benchmark.

Human, or bot? Twitter may soon have everyone on the social platform prove their identity by opening the verification process to all users.

The expansion of the verification system would roll out in stages, Dorsey said.

Gasca said that a small team has been tasked to review verification and that because of how it began and how it has changed in recent years, verification is confusing and interpreted differently than what the company intends it to be.

Broadcom cries foul as U.S. regulator intervenes in Qualcomm saga
The company is now based in Singapore, but said in November that it will move its legal headquarters back to the United States . The United States Department of the Treasury said that the CFIUS now can look into Broadcom's acquisition plan in depth.

Gasca said that verification was supposed to mean "identity", "status" and a way to "counter impersonation".

As it stands, only celebrities, creators, and other high-profile figures like established journalists can add the blue checkmark-an online status symbol of sorts-to their account.

As Twitter previously noted, the goal is to come up with metrics to measure the health of the interactions on Twitter.

Twitter wants to distance its self from looking like it supports content on accounts with checkmarks.

There have been a number of recent scams involving cloned Twitter accounts. It will probably be a while before all real users get a checkmark, however, as Dorsey said the priority is verification around candidates in the 2020 United States election.

Proposals on how Twitter should address its health-safety metrics are being accepted through April 1, 2018. From 2009 to 2012, she was an award-winning syndicated columnist for a number of daily newspapers from NY to Texas.
