  • Group to gather outside Wrexham courts to show support for Alfie Evans

The latest development comes after The Court of Appeal upheld a ruling on Wednesday that prevented Tom Evans and Kate James from bringing their 23-month-old son to Rome for more treatment.

Tom Evans said he and mother Kate James, 20, now hoped to have a "positive" meeting to discuss their son's care with doctors and praised the "professionalism" and "dignity" of staff.

Doctors at Alder Hey have argued that Alfie can not recover from his "relentless and progressive" brain condition that has left him in a semi-vegetative state.

"We got rejected yesterday to go to Italy unfortunately", Evans said outsider Alder Hey hospital, where Alfie has been since December 2016.

The Court of Appeal upheld a ruling on Wednesday preventing the 23-month-old from travelling overseas after life support was withdrawn.

His parents appealed the court's decision to keep Evans in the United Kingdom on the grounds that he is improving and can seek further treatment overseas.

He suggested Alfie could live for "possibly years" without life support if allowed to go home.

But High Court Lord Justice Anthony Hayden allowed for British doctors to consider letting the boy go home.

I said exactly that at the time of the death of Charlie Gard and repeat it again now as little Alfie Evans battles for life.

"In both the Charlie Gard case and that of Alfie Evans, hard-working staff doing very hard jobs have been demonised, verbally abused and threatened", she said.

The months-long legal battle between Alfie's parents, backed by a Christian pressure group, and his doctors has drawn interventions from the pope and Italian authorities, who support the parents' desire to have their son treated in Italy. The Italian government went as far as granting citizenship to Alfie in an attempt to have him immediately transferred to Italy. Some people say it's a miracle.

Alfie's plight has received considerable global media attention in recent days, especially in Italy and the United States. The parents' lawyers went to court Wednesday to try to overturn that decision.

Professor Dominic Wilkinson, a consultant neonatologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital and director of medical ethics at the University of Oxford, said the fact Alfie can breathe unaided is not a sign that he has been misdiagnosed.

"As an organisation, we have endured attacks upon our motivation, our professionalism and our ethics". In such cases, the rights of the child take primacy over the parents' right to decide what's best for their offspring.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive of the Royal and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "I - along with staff at our hospitals - have been upset and disheartened by the ongoing abuse and threats aimed at our colleagues at Alder Hey and other NHS staff in the past few weeks".
