Australia thumped in final test

South Africa, celebrating their first home Test series win over Australia since the end of apartheid, were farewelling much-loved paceman Morne Morkel.

The success was their first at home against the Australians since 1970, although South Africa have claimed Test series wins on their last three tours Down Under. Looking back at his global career, Morkel's said the win that stands out most for him was being a part of the side that famously beat Australia in Australia in 2008-09, in a Test series for the first time since re-admission.

The fall-out from Australia's ball tampering scandal had a major effect on the performance of the team, new captain Tim Paine said after his team were thrashed by 492 runs in the fourth Test at the Wanderers Stadium yesterday. Australia's collective batting average of 22.02 was their lowest in a series of at least four Tests since the dark days of the World Series Cricket era, when an enormously weakened side averaged 19.17 in the Ashes in England. "There was probably some noise being made from the public in the a year ago or so and the guys thought maybe while we kept winning and playing a certain brand of cricket, while it was working we wouldn't change it".

Fast bowler Morne Morkel says he will definitely miss playing global after helping the Proteas to an historic series victory over Australia.

The Handscomb wicket was his 50th against Australia, but he wasn't done.

South Africa seamer Vernon Philander had Shaun Marsh caught off the pad on the first ball of the day, removed his brother Mitchell Marsh off the fourth ball, and Australia succumbed in an embarrassing final act.

Luckily, I still have a couple of years of cricket left in me and maybe after that I'd eventually say I've had enough. "The guys were really pumped after that first game". The run out denied South Africa's Morne Morkel one more wicket in his last test before retiring.

In nearly every statistic, South Africa dominated the Ashes winners: Four batsmen made centuries in the series, with opener Aiden Markram collecting two.

The cheating scandal led to captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner losing their leadership positions, while coach Darren Lehmann resigned in tears shortly after.

South African quick bowler Kagiso Rabada was declared Man of the Series for his tally of 23 wickets from 8 innings, at an average of 19.26 runs per scalp.

STOUSH OF THE SERIES: The ugly spat between Warner and Quinton de Kock in Durban was triggered by a comment South Africa's keeper made about Warner's wife.

Australia have been thoroughly beaten and if the 322-run caning in Cape Town was an indication of absent minds after the ball-tampering trauma, their abject second innings surrender was a case of both feet in the plane mentally.

"I thought we were going to be better than we were". Not one day did I not enjoy coming to the nets and warm-ups. "Since then, walking on the field for South Africa every time was unbelievable", ESPNcricinfo quoted Morkel as saying.
