Demonstrations resume in Armenia following opposition leader's call

Nikol Pashinyan, an opposition MP who is the leader of the protests that ousted former Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan, insists that the political parties in the parliament should vote him in as the next interim PM before new snap elections. Sargsyan was supposedly nominated again for the position Prime Minister despite having previously served two terms, something that protesters would not tolerate and proceeded to demonstrate.
In the streets of Yerevan, flag-draped demonstrators blocked intersections, sang songs, played music and chanted slogans accusing the ruling party of clinging to power against the people's will.
The Prosperous Armenia Party, which holds 31 seats, threw its weight behind Pashinyan on Saturday.
After talks with Pashinyan on Sunday, parliamentary leader of the Republican Party, Vahram Baghdasaryan, said the party would not "impede the election of the people's candidate" if all three opposition factions in parliament supported him. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia will not nominate its candidate.
The Republican Party still holds a majority of 58 seats of 105 in Armenia's parliament, the National Assembly.
Eduard Sharmazanov, vice speaker of parliament and the ruling Republican Party's spokesman, said he doubted that Pashinian was a suitable candidate for the role of prime minister.
