US President Donald Trump said yesterday that he did not know that his personal attorney paid adult film star Stormy Daniels US$130,000 days before the presidential election to prevent her from publicly accusing Trump of having an affair.

Last month Ms Daniels filed a lawsuit against the president, alleging that the non-disclosure agreement was invalid because Mr Trump did not sign it.

Asked why Cohen had paid the money Trump said: "You'll have to ask Michael Cohen".

Trump also claimed that he did not know where Cohen got the $130,000 to pay Stormy. There's plenty there that Trump would hope to distance himself from, and there's also the matter of Cohen possibly violating laws regarding individual campaign contribution levels - given that this hush payment was made immediately before the November 2016 election. On Thursday, NBC News tweeted this clip of a reporter asking Trump about the scandal on Air Force One, and amazingly, Trump answered a few questions.

"You'll have to ask Michael Cohen", Trump said. She's said she had sex with Trump once in 2006 and their relationship continued for about a year. "You'll have to ask Michael".

And in the third tweet , the president wrote , "These big flows of people are all trying to take advantage of DACA . And he wants certain changes to the USA immigration system that some lawmakers are not comfortable with.

The president had dinner with Cohen on March 24, the night before the airing of a "60 Minutes" segment in which Clifford detailed her story of the affair and the subsequent silencing of her claims.

On Thursday, her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said Trump's remarks improved their legal standing.

The payment came in conjunction with a nondisclosure agreement Daniels signed that was created to prevent her from speaking about the alleged sexual encounter.

"Our case just got that much better".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders continues to maintain that the president denies having any relationship with Clifford and did not know about the payment or the non-disclosure agreement.
