  • President Trump's plan to send National Guard troops to the Mexico border: Here's what we know – and what we don't

The US state of Texas is deploying National Guard members to the border with Mexico following a call from President Donald Trump.

The total so far remains well short of the 2,000 to 4,000 National Guard members that Mr Trump told reporters he wanted to send.

Arizona and Texas announced that they would send 400 National Guard members to the U.S. -Mexico border by next week in response to President Donald Trump's call for troops.

"If your recent statements are the result of frustration due to domestic policy issues, to your laws, or to your Congress, it is to them that you should turn to, not to Mexicans", Nieto said in a video statement published on Twitter.

On Wednesday, the administration said it was coordinating with the governors of the four USA states that border on Mexico on deploying the Guard, a reserve wing of the US armed forces that is partly under the supervision of state governors.

Ducey is the first of four border governors to respond to Trump's request to use the National Guard to support the work of U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

"We stand ready to support the needs of the state and the nation at the request of the governor or the president", Lt. Col. Travis Walters, a spokesman for the Texas Military Department, the agency that oversees the state's National Guard branches, said in a statement.

The states of New Mexico and California have been asked to take similar action to Texas and Arizona. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has voiced support for the deployment, but the governors of California and New Mexico have not commented publicly.

The Pentagon could not say where the money would come from and Trump admitted the White House was still "looking at" costs.

"We have to have strong borders". State lawmakers said previous year that the cost for the National Guard deployment and Texas Military Forces expenses on the border was almost $63 million.

"The Guard will provide air support, reconnaissance support, operational support, construction of border infrastructure, and logistical support". If the administration determines that more troops are needed, "we'll make that decision at that time".

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, also a Republican, on Friday became one of the latest leaders to oppose Trump's plan.

Gov. Doug Ducey announced the troop call-up and said he was working closely with the defense and homeland security departments. His spokeswoman, Mary-Sarah Kinner, said in an email that Sandoval does not believe the mission would be "an appropriate use" of the Nevada Guard.

By Tuesday, he'd kicked things up a notch, making a surprise announcement at a luncheon: He planned to send the military to guard the border. They have provided less than a tenth of the United States dollars 18 billion Trump requested.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, said Friday that she will consult with the head of the Alabama Guard to see what resources are available.

Although, the National Guard does a lot of domestic missions, Hawkins says it won't interfere with the work at home.

It has also raised questions about who will fund the mission.

The US National Guard has previously been deployed to help patrol the southern border, in 2010 under former president Barack Obama, and from 2006-2008 under George W. Bush.
