  • UK backs United States military action on Syria

These are not the actions of a man. "Every American, and particularly our men and women in uniform and their families, deserve far better than action without debate, accountability, and a Constitutionally-required authorization for the use of military force", he said. Witnesses on the ground in Damascus reported hearing explosions in the Syrian capital, where more than a million people live.

British PM Theresa May also supported the US-led air strikes on Syria by calling them a "clear message" against the use of chemical weapons.

Most of the missiles were intercepted before reaching targets, it noted.

They acknowledged that the strike was created to degrade Syria's chemical weapons capability without killing civilians or the many foreign fighters in Syria's multi-sided civil war, particularly those from Russian Federation.

The Syrian government has denied it used any chemical weapons in an attack, while Russia's Foreign Ministry claims there is no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma. Russian Ambassador to US Anatoly Antonov in a statement said, "All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris".

"To Iran, and to Russian Federation, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women, and children?" he asked.

Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi of the Russian military's General Staff says Saturday's strike hasn't caused any casualties and Syrian military facilities targeted by the U.S., Britain and France have suffered only minor damage. "This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very awful regime", he added.

The US leader also expressed gratitude toward allies in the United Kingdom and France for their involvement and support in the operation. The reaction followed airstrikes overnight by the United States, France and Britain. "But it is equally important for us to be aware of the distraction tactics that some of the actors in the world are using today and to not allow those tactics to work".

French President Emmanuel Macron said the response was "limited to the Syrian regime's capabilities to produce and use chemical weapons".

In a speech she gave a vivid description of the victims of the chemical strike that killed scores, huddling in basements as gas rained down.

"The red line set by France in May 2017 has been crossed", he said.

The ministry reported that a total of 100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles had been fired (while 59 missiles were fired at Shayrat Airbase last year), majority were shot down by Syria's air defense units while approaching the targets. In April 2017, the U.S. struck an airbase in Syria using cruise missiles.

May's announcement was made minutes after Donald Trump revealed that he had ordered the strike at 9pm on Friday, explaining in a televised statement that it was a response to the "evil and despicable" chemical attack by the Syrian regime, which took place last weekend.

Russia's ambassador to the U.S. warned that there would be consequences for the US-led military strikes, adding that it was not acceptable to insult Russia's president.

Trump said Assad's recent attack was a fallout of Russia's "failure" to keep the promise of eliminating Syria's chemical weapons.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, has slammed the Western states' move, saying that the strike "has been launched at the capital of a sovereign state that has been fighting for survival for years amid terrorist aggression".
