Gaza health officials said 363 people were wounded by Israeli fire or treated for tear gas inhalation, but did not provide a breakdown.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said it troops responded with riot dispersal means in dealing with protestors in Gaza. Others were also injured by rubber-coated steel rounds.

Mohammed al-Hajjar, a Palestinian photographer for the news website Middle East Eye, was lightly injured by a live round that grazed his right arm while he was covering protests east of Gaza city, according to his employer, the PJS, and news reports. Hamas, the political group that governs Gaza, has said it would give $3,000 to the families of anyone killed in the protests and $500 or $200 to those wounded, depending on the severity of the injuries. It has said some of those at the border tried to damage the fence, planted explosives or hurled firebombs.

The protests since March 30 posed a challenge to Israel, which dismissed criticism of its use of live fire, saying its rules of engagement are necessary and will not change. But an Israeli military spokesman said the army was not involved.

Akram reported from Khuzaa, Gaza Strip.

"I am not afraid of death because there is no life in Gaza already", she said.

Protesters have set up tented camps near the frontier as a protest dubbed "The Great March of Return" - evoking a longtime call for refugees to regain ancestral homes in what is now Israel - moved into its third week. Israelis say that amounts to calling for the country's destruction.

The first two Fridays - with far less on intervening days - saw tens of thousands gather near the border with Israel at five locations.

The Members of Congress are urging Gaza protesters to carry out their right to assembly nonviolently, while also calling on members of Israel Defense Forces to exercise utmost restraint in the use of deadly force and to fully comply with worldwide law. Seven were killed in other circumstances, including six militants engaged in apparent attempts to carry out attacks or infiltrate Israel.
