  • PSLV-C40 carrying Cartosat series along with 30 other satellites lifts off from first launch pad at Sriharikota

PSLV shot off the satellite into the orbit 19 minutes after takeoff.

The IRNSS-1I is the seventh operational satellite in the NavIC constellation after two satellites that are considered non-operational - IRNSS-1H (because of non-separation of payload fairing) and IRNSS-1A (because of atomic clock failure). The launch is ISRO's second attempt at sending a replacement satellite.

The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is a constellation of seven satellites that provides indigenously developed regional GPS services called NavIC. The objective of these IRNSS satellites is to create India's own navigation system which would be in the lines of US' GPS or Global Positioning System.

Like its other IRNSS predecessors, IRNSS-1I also carries two types of payloads for navigation and ranging. The program provides enhanced navigation coverage when combined with signals from GPS satellites, and independent positioning data in case foreign navigation signals are cut off.

"We will be launching the GSAT-9 satellite using the GSLV Mk-III rocket (carryingthe indigenous cryogenic engine) and also GSAT-11, besides PSLV launches that included the Chandrayaan-II mission towards the end of the year", he added.

The PSLV took off at 2234 GMT (6:34 p.m. EDT) with a rush of flame from a solid-fueled core motor and four strap-on solid rocket boosters.

The satellite, with a mission life of about 10 years, would provide thrust to mobile communication through multi-beam coverage facility, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

The 1,425-kg satellite made by Bengaluru-headquartered Alpha Design Technologies, in collaboration with Isro, is the second satellite to be actively built by private industry. "I am really grateful to the entire ISRO family for having worked this hard and making IRNSS-1I a success", Sivan said.

While IRNSS-1I will replace IRNSS-1A, ISRO has no intention of de-orbiting the latter. The fishermen can also get alert messages relating to bad weather, high waves or when they approach worldwide maritime boundary line.

People can use these services which are provided through a software application on a smart phone.

In the road transport sector, NavIC helps commuters to traverse distances and also enables transport operators to track their vehicles.

The space agency said NavIC is also used for applications like location-based services, survey and alignment and time synchronised services. The satellite remained inside the nose shroud after the rocket reached a lower-than-planned orbit.
