  • Ryan backs Mc Carthy for Speaker He's 'the right person'

Neither McCarthy nor Scalise have yet declared their intentions, though both men have been jockeying behind the scenes for the top spot in the House GOP conference.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., left, and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., confer as they arrive to meet with reporters following a closed-door GOP strategy session at the Capitol in Washington on February 6.

"We have a good relationship with Kevin, we have a good relationship with Scalise but we don't even know who else is running", the senior official said.

During the last six months of 2017, funds raised by a PAC connected to McCarthy and Vice President Mike Pence accounted for about a fourth of the total fundraising haul by several California Republicans, including Steve Knight, R-Lancaster, and David Valadao, R-Hanford. "So we want to lay out a set of principles that any speaker has to follow", Virginia Representative Dave Brat, a Freedom Caucus member, said.

Ryan took over the Speakership in 2015 after John Boehner (R-Ohio) retired due to hostilities with the House Freedom Caucus, a conservative coalition that opposed significant portions of Boehner's agenda. Some have said that in the "Trump primary", McCarthy has an edge, while on the other hand, Scalise has been termed as the "Legend of Louisiana".

"I would fully support Jordan", said Jones.

Hurricane names Harvey, Irma and Maria officially 'retired'
Maria was used three times in the Atlantic and three times in the Western Pacific, while Nate was also used three times. Life in Puerto Rico is still far from normal after a worst-case scenario strike from Hurricane Maria in mid-September.

Jordan can play a spoiler role for McCarthy and not much else. House Republicans are now expected to hold their leadership elections in November following the midterm elections.

Ryan told NBC he will support the Republican Representative from California.

By advancing their own candidate, the conservatives may not be counting on winning, but that they would certainly influence the outcome of the race, several members said. "I think we'll have a seamless transition".

The introduction of a potential third candidacy could make the post-election closed-door vote for Republican party leader - either in late November or early December - more complicated.

Ryan dismissed the possibility that Democrats would take over the House and pointed to recent accomplishments as evidence the party would keep its majority. But ultimately the majority leader couldn't build the consensus he needed to win the speaker's race.
