Trump Skipping Americas Summit to Oversee Syria Response

  • Donald Trump cancels first trip to Latin America 'to deal with Syria crisis'

The U.S. will still be represented at the Summit of the Americas, but Vice President Pence will be there, not Trump.

"President Trump will not attend the 8th Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru or travel to Bogota, Colombia as originally scheduled", Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday in a statement.

"At the president's request, the vice-president will travel in his stead".

The earlier US announcement that President Donald Trump will not attend the 8th Summit of the Americas to be held this week here in the Peruvian capital reflects a "low priority" for Latin America on Washington's agenda, said Peruvian analysts.

Last year, Washington bombed a Syrian government air base after a chemical weapons attack. He would not describe the US response or say when it would come. "This is about humanity and it can't be allowed to happen", Trump told reporters at the White House. "Russia could stop this senseless slaughter if it wanted, but it stands with the Assad regime and supports without any hesitation".

Trump is also annoyed that the FBI investigators have raided the office and hotel room of his personal lawyer, which the President said was "disgraceful" of them, although they were just doing their jobs and they do have cause to suspect this lawyer of various wrongdoings. The raid was separate from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

The White House has pushed back on criticism blaming Trump for the attack after he said he wanted to remove all USA forces from Syria.

"I'm going to bet you he holds his regular schedule today", Kudlow said.

Pence travelled to Latin America in August 2017, visiting Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Panama. The trip had been expected to be tense and awkward because of Trump's repeated disparagement of the region over immigration, narcotics and trade.

United States President Donald Trump has called off his planned trip this weekend to South America, announced the White House.

Trump has reversed some of President Barack Obama's diplomatic and economic outreach to Cuba, including pulling many USA diplomats out of the country following unexplained health attacks on Americans previous year.
