A test of GOP sanity in West Virginia

"As some have said, I am Trumpier than Trump".

Some Republicans worry Blankenship's controversial past could jeopardize their chances at unseating Manchin.

"I'm honored that President Trump encouraged voters to cast their vote for me to Make America Great Again", he said in a statement.

The GOP is holding on to a razor-thin 51-49 majority in the U.S. Senate and Democrats are defending ten states that voted for Trump in 2016, and both parties are keenly aware that avoiding unforced missteps and nominating quality candidates is the difference between a Senate majority or minority.

He has also made weird attacks on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) a major part of his campaign platform, standing by his use of the racial slur "Chinaperson" to describe McConnell's father-in-law, and arguing in a campaign ad that McConnell "has created millions of jobs for China people".

The Blankenship campaign's own internal survey puts the former coal boss far ahead; the poll of 1,000 West Virginia Republican voters gave Mr. Blankenship 37 percent, compared to just 20 percent for Mr. Morrisey and 15 percent for Mr. Jenkins.

In reply, Blankenship Monday also reminded voters of that Alabama race and the fact that Trump endorsed Moore.

Many are convinced that a Blankenship win, coming just months after the disastrous Alabama Senate race, would destroy the party's prospects of defeating Democratic Sen.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is under attack from Don Blankenship, a Republican running for Senate seat in West Virginia as an anti-establishment candidate. "Vote Rep. Jenkins or A.G. Morrisey!" he added. Trump won the district by nearly 50 points in 2016, but the districts ancestrally blue roots and historic support for Manchin may create a competitive race in November.

Like Trump, Blankenship has also taken to labeling his political enemies, calling McConnell "Cocaine Mitch" in a recent ad. The former CEO of Massey Energy served a year in prison for his involvement in the deadly Upper Big Branch mine explosion.

The president had offered Moore his full-throated support in the days leading to the special election in the deep red Cotton State.

Indeed, Mr. Blankenship's rising poll numbers have coincided with an increasing number of highly inflammatory statements and personal attacks on powerful figures such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Don Blankenship: "Hi. I'm Don Blankenship, candidate for U.S. Senate, and I approve this message".

"I'm proud to have President Trump's support", he tweeted.

Trump's run was also defined by a host of conspiracy theories, from raising false questions about Ted Cruz's father being tied to President John F. Kennedy's death to repeatedly questioning President Barack Obama's birth certificate to besmirching Muslims by suggesting they were cheering in New Jersey on September 11. Trump Jr. tweeted. "No more fumbles like Alabama". "Let's find the very best person in West Virginia and not have a situation where we can't compete in November".
