The first of what will be quarterly reports on standards enforcement should be as notable to investors as the company's quarterly earnings reports.

The numbers were released in Facebook's Community Standards Enforcement Report, which covers areas including fake accounts, spam, hate speech, graphic violence, terrorist propaganda, and nudity.

- 836 million instances of spam had action taken against them. In Q1, Facebook disabled about 583 million fake accounts, most of which were disabled within minutes of registration.

In its first public release of such data, Facebook said that of every 10,000 pieces of content viewed on the social platform in the first quarter, an estimated 22 to 27 pieces contained graphic violence, up from an estimate of 16 to 19 late past year, Reuters reports.

The posts that keep the Facebook reviewers the busiest are those showing adult nudity or sexual activity - quite apart from child pornography, which is not covered by the report. The company says more than 96 percent of the posts removed by Facebook for featuring sex, nudity or terrorism-related content were flagged by monitoring software before any users reported them.

With regards to graphic violence, 3.5 million items were removed in Q1 2018 and 86% was flagged before it was reported.

The company only recently developed the metrics as a way to measure its progress, and would probably change them over time, said Guy Rosen, its vice president of product management. The problem with trying to proactively scour Facebook for hate speech is that the company's AI can only understand so much at the moment. For every 10,000 views of content on Facebook, the company said, roughly 8 of them were removed for featuring sex or nudity in the first quarter, up from 7 views at the end of past year.

Facebook, which like Google is now working on A.I. technology to identify "hate speech", admitted that its current hate-speech-detection technology "still doesn't work that well" and that automatically flagged content "needs to be checked by our review teams".

Facebook today revealed for the first time how much sex, violence and terrorist, propaganda has infiltrated the platform-and whether the company has successfully taken the content down.

As Mark said at F8 we have a lot of work still to do to prevent abuse.

He said technology like artificial intelligence is still years from effectively detecting most bad content because context is so important. Find us on Facebook too!

In the majority of cases, Facebook's automated systems actually did a pretty good job of both detecting and flagging content before users could even get the chance to report it.

Publishing official numbers is part of the company's efforts to become more transparent ahead of global criticism.

All told, Facebook took action on almost 1.6 billion pieces of content during the six months ending in March, a tiny fraction of all the activity on its social network, according to the company.
