One of the most deadly attacks in Indonesia involved multiple bombs that went off inside and outside nightclubs in 2002 in Bali.

He said 41 people were wounded at that location, including two police officers, while one or more of the bombers were killed.

A further three people were killed and two wounded when another bomb exploded at an apartment complex in Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city, just hours later, police said. Meanwhile, the mother and her two daughters - aged 9 and 12 - strapped explosives to their bodies and blew themselves up at Diponegoro Indonesian Christian Church.

"PGI is concerned because this had happened many times and often taken place around the time of Sunday services", said Jeirry Sumampow, a spokesman for the Indonesia's Communion of Churches. It wasn't clear if the shootings were connected with the church attacks.

Separately, national police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said police fatally shot four suspected militants and arrested two others early Sunday in West Java towns.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo branded the attack as "barbaric" ordering his police force to break up the network of perpetrators.

Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority country, has seen a resurgence of Islamist militancy in recent months. "We will not back down in the fight against terrorism", Marsudi said in a message sent on Twitter. In recent years, the country has faced a new threat as the rise of the Islamic State group in the Middle East invigorated local militant networks.

Almost 90% of Indonesians are Muslim, but the country is also home to sizeable communities of Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and people who adhere to traditional beliefs.
