  • Iran condemns Israel's strikes on Syria - diplomat

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the Iranian rocket attacks and Israel's response in Aachen, western Germany, and called for prudence and de-escalation.

On May 10 the Israeli Air Force carried out precision strikes against dozens of targets in Syria, including those of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force. Trump's move may even have emboldened Netanyahu to strike Iranian targets in Syria.

The European Union called reports about Iranian strikes against Israeli army posts from inside Syria "extremely worrying" and said Israel had the right to defend itself.

Syria blamed Israel for the Wednesday strikes that hit near the capital.

It reiterated that Iran was preparing to resume "industrial-scale" uranium enrichment "without any restrictions" unless Europe provided solid guarantees that it could maintain trade ties despite renewed United States sanctions. But the possibility of a war between Israel and Iran is very real.

The spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Matt Frei Israel doesn't want war with any of its neighbours.

Eurovision axes Chinese broadcast after censorship row

Syria's state news agency SANA said opposition fighters who chose to stay in the suburbs of Babila, Beit Sahem and Yalda will hand over the weapons and return to normal life. It is doubtful Hezbollah has much interest in reprising its role as an Iranian messenger, which is how it has been perceived by many in Lebanon during the years of the civil war in Syria. This has been a massive financial investment at a time when Iran is just recovering from the sanctions relief of the nuclear deal and its currency is trading at all time lows. Israeli hardliners, among them Mr Netenyahu, have previously advocated airstrikes to destroy its nuclear programme.

Khamenei said this week he is highly doubtful that Europe will provide the "real guarantees" needed for Iran to stay in the nuclear deal.

One thing the Iranians would be smart to consider is the growing friendship between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which is largely based on the enemy they share in Iran.

Syrian state TV and the Observatory said police forces are getting ready to enter the area on Friday to guarantee security.

In the wake of President Trump's announcement of the USA withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear accord and the direct clashes between Israeli and Iranian forces in Syria, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and watch a parade. The Israeli security cabinet is satisfied with the massive operation and said Iran got the message.
