Hazy accounts of two men arguing and the vague description of a vehicle speeding north down a Missouri highway are the best leads investigators have as they hunt a mysterious man believed to have stabbed a young Air National Guard member to death Saturday in an apparent road rage murder. Witnesses told police they saw two men arguing on the side of the highway with both of their cars pulled over.
At the scene of the stabbing on Saturday, drivers alerted police to the area after seeing Harter stumbling into traffic.
Initial reports said the suspect fled north on I-470 in their vehicle.
"We think it's truly just one of those stupid incidents of road rage where someone lost their temper and did something really stupid", said Sgt. Chris Depue, a spokesperson for Lee's Summit Police Department, during a Sunday press conference.
"My son did not die alone even though whoever did this, you left him out there to die alone", Harter's mother said Fox4KC reported. It is a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck, extended cab Z71 edition, that is maroon. It is believed that that Harter suffered a single stab wound to the chest during the altercation and stumbled back into the lanes of traffic where he died.
