According to Dawn, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi strongly criticised the NAB for launching the probe and asked the National Assembly to constitute a committee which would summon the NAB Chairman Justice Javed Iqbal and investigate the allegations.

"NAB hasn't started an investigation against Nawaz or filed a reference", Kaira said, adding that it is Nawaz's policy to fight the institutions and create clashes between them.

He noted that general elections will be held in Pakistan in two months and the NAB is making allegations that the former premier was sending money to India.

"NAB's vindictive approach is weakening democracy", claimed Nawaz.

The media reports claimed that a record of this existed in the World Bank's Migration and Remittances book of 2016.

Sharif, 68, is facing three corruption cases in the accountability court following the Supreme Court's verdict in the Panama Papers case.

Asad Umar of the PTI, however, categorically rejected the prime minister's proposal and said, "If parliament intervenes to suppress the voice of the investigative institutions, it will be setting a risky trend and we can not accept any such committee", he declared.

During the press conference NAB Chief said that he will probe into corruption even if someone calls it crime.

Commenting on her party's frequently-used term against their detractors in disguise, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb remarked that "aliens" are those who sent 13 prime ministers and presidents packing throughout Pakistan's 70-year history. Mr Sharif has dismissed the corruption charges as politically motivated.

While the World Bank promptly responded to the NAB move and stated "the report does not include any mention of money laundering nor does it name any individuals", the State Bank of Pakistan said the estimates showed in the WB report were based on "assumptions" which did not reflect the reality. If convicted, Sharif could face jail time.

In a press release, the anti-corruption watchdog took notice of the media reports regarding alleged transfer of $4.9 billion to India by the ex-PM and others.
