  • Roseanne Barr's TV show cancelled after Twitter race row

On Air Force One she brushed away questions as to what, if anything, Trump would say on the topic. She also said she was leaving Twitter. CEO Bob Iger said the decision to end the show was "the right thing" to do.

"I think we have to turn it into a teaching moment", responded Jarret.

Following the Jarrett tweet, "Roseanne" consulting producer Wanda Sykes said she wouldn't be returning to the show.

"Look at her ratings!" "And it's up to all of us to push back".

"We have to stop pretending that or we're going to destroy the moral fabric of this country", he concluded.

The retweets included attacks on ESPN host Keith Olbermann, ABC host Joy Behar and HBO host Bill Maher as well as a false meme about Jarrett that purports to be a Stanford yearbook quote.

Ms Barr has also been dropped from her talent agency.

Finally, she sent out a tweet blaming Ambien for her Tuesday tweets and asked fans not to defend her. "I made a mistake I wish I hadn't but...don't defend it please. ty", she tweeted. Barr also made another apology late Tuesday.

Barr served as a star and executive producer on the ABC show, which was a ratings phenomenon when it returned to USA television earlier this year for a 10th series, after its original run came to an end in May 1997.

"Our goal was to promote constructive discussion about the issues that divide us", said Tom Werner. "I hope the good work done is not totally eclipsed by these abhorrent and offensive comments, and that Roseanne seeks the help she so clearly needs".

Whether it was a joke or not, was it right for ABC to cancel the show?

The revival of the comedy was a surprise smash for ABC, owned by the Walt Disney Co., and was counted on to lead the network's fortunes next season.

The comedian deleted Monday night's original post and apologised, but could not contain the backlash. Because Barr has been behaving repugnantly on Twitter for some time, feeding insane right-wing conspiracy theories and peddling anti-Muslim propoganda.

Meanwhile, her former colleagues attempted to distance themselves from the star. Donald Trump Jr. retweeted two of Barr's statements about Soros, although not the remark about Jarrett.

Roseanne Barr was sacked for publishing a tweet that dehumanized Valerie Jarrett, but her history of contributing to the dehumanization of others - through her support for Trump and her propagating of conspiracy theories - was not enough to disqualify her in the first place.

Her tweet yesterday about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett was a lapse too revolting to be ignored. It caused an outrage on social media, and just hours later, ABC cancelled Barr's show Roseanne. Season 11 had been planned to premiere in the fall.
