  • The primary battleground is London- where Labour has been hoping to ride a wave of Remainer anger to seize Tory strongholds like Wandsworth Westminster and Barnet

Angela Wilkins, leader of the Labour group in Bromley, said five people were unable to vote at polling stations as a result of the pilot and the scheme also caused long delays.

Meanwhile London is the major battleground after recent polls pointed towards a substantial swing to Labour, and Corbyn's party will also be hoping to win control of Tower Hamlets and Barnet and possibly even the flagship Conservative councils of Wandsworth and Westminster.

But it was feared beforehand by Labour campaigners in the room who predicted they would lose the seat from what they had heard on the doorstep.

Mr Khan, speaking at the Wandsworth count, told the Press Association: "What I'd be disappointed by was if we didn't make progress across London in terms of the numbers of councillors".

The Tory MP told BBC News: 'We've lost control of the council.

Labour have gained Plymouth, but they've lost Derby to no overall control.

After 14 years of Tory rule at Trafford Council it went to no overall control.

Labour defended the other seven wards it held prior to the election, with incumbent councillors Gary Hewson, Loraine Woolley, Pat Vaughan, Adrianna McNulty and Helena Mair being re-elected, along with a new face in the Carholme ward in Laura McWilliams and Bill Bilton returning to City Hall after a two year break. The Conservatives are defending slim majorities on councils such as Amber Valley, but could take control of Peterborough.

The election on Thursday, May 3, saw the Conservatives increase their majority on the authority from a one-seat to a five-seat majority.

The Liberal Democrats gained control of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, a heavily Remain voting area, from the Conservatives.

Party chairman Brandon Lewis said the Conservatives did better than expected.

Counting was set to continue throughout Friday, when mayoral results will also be declared.

Across England, more than 4,000 seats are being contested in around 150 councils - including all 32 London boroughs, as well as every ward in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle.

He said: All the hype in the media about Labour gains in certain boroughs was never going to be the case.
