  • Precious time Dr Goodall speaks to his grandchildren and their partners about some of the plants displayed in the gardens

The 104-year-old Australian scientist who drew worldwide attention this week to his right-to-die campaign ended his life on Thursday, advocacy group Exit global has said.

Speaking to reporters at a hotel near Spalentor Gate in Basel on Wednesday, Goodall stressed he was happy to have the chance to end his life in Switzerland but would have preferred to do so back home.

Switzerland allows assisted suicide "for anyone who acknowledges in writing that they are taking their lives willingly - without being forced", according to The Associated Press. "I no longer want to continue life".

The ecologist, who was born in England and moved to Australia, also had a final meal of fish and chips with cheesecake for dessert.

He stressed that it was his "own choice to end my life" and said: "I look forward to that".

Voluntary euthanasia has been legal in Switzerland since the 1940s but is illegal in Australia.

The best-known group to help foreigners end their lives in the Alpine country is Dignitas, but others include Life Circle in Basel, Mr Goodall's choice.

Prof. Goodall was cleared by two Swiss doctors, including a psychiatrist who said he was of sound mind, to proceed with the "Swiss option".

He died "peacefully" at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Philip Nitschke of the assisted suicide advocacy group Exit International tweeted.

Four family members and a close friend had travelled to be at his side when he ended his life.

His final wish was for his body to be either donated to medicine or cremated and the ashes "sprinkled locally", the right-to-die organization revealed.

"My feeling is that an old person like myself should have full citizenship rights, including the right of assisted suicide", the 104-year-old man added. "What's the use of that?" said the scientist, who appeared to have lost none of his sense of humor on Tuesday, wearing a top inscribed with the words "Aging Disgracefully".

Assisted dying is illegal in Australia. except for in the state of Victoria, which in November 2017 voted to legalize euthanasia in some cases. "I am content to leave them undone".

In the end, Goodall said, he would like to be remembered "as an instrument of freeing the elderly" to choose their own death.

He said he hoped his story would "increase the pressure" for governments to change laws around assisted suicide.
