  • Reports said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had called Argentinian President Mauricio Macri to ask him to persuade the team not to cancel their visit

At one location, at least two Palestinians fired guns at an army post, while others threw grenades or used helium balloons and kites to fly explosives over the border, the army said.

The Palestinians said the Argentinians pulled out of the match after they realised Israel was using its presence in Jerusalem for political gain.

The sports-crazed nation of Israel was in uproar on Wednesday over Argentina's abrupt cancellation of a World Cup warm-up match following pro-Palestinian protests, with some of the country's leaders accusing Lionel Messi and his teammates of caving to terrorism.

Gaza: Israeli troops fired tear gas and live bullets at Palestinians taking part in weekly protests at the Gaza Strip border with Israel on Friday, injuring at least 100 people, medics said.

The Friday rallies came after months of mass protests in Gaza which proved Israel's inability to stop the Palestinians despite widespread use of deadly force against unarmed protesters. But this is not a peaceful protest.

"We will work next week to get the maximum number of votes", a diplomat from a country that supported the measure told Agence France Presse on Friday.

Israel's use of potentially lethal force against the protesters has drawn global criticism. He said the demonstrations would continue until Palestinians achieve their demand for a right of return to ancestral lands.

Two million Palestinians have sunk into poverty as Israel and Egypt, citing security needs, clamped down on Gaza's borders while Hamas diverted millions of dollars into building its terrorist infrastructure in the Strip.

Around 2 million people live in Gaza, a lot of them the stateless descendants of refugees from what is now Israel. Rights groups have said Israel's open-fire rules are unlawful.

Israel has accused Hamas of trying to carry out attacks and damage the fence under the guise of the protests, and that it only targets instigators. Israel and Hamas have fought three cross-border wars since 2008.

On Thursday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for the Muslim masses to take to the streets and protest the "tyrants" in honor of Quds Day.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed the area in a move not recognised by the global community.

As part of the campaign Mohammed published a video on May 15 pleading to the Argentine team and its captain Lionel Messi "to stand in solidarity with Palestinians and boycott the scheduled game with Israel".
