  • WABCA Texas man is recovering after he was bitten by a rattlesnake that he had just decapitated

A Corpus Christi, Texas man was bitten by a rattlesnake after he already beheaded the snake.

The Houston television station reported that Jennifer Sutcliffe and her husband were doing yard work the weekend of May 27 near Lake Corpus Christi when she spotted the snake.

But when he bent down to pick up the snake to dispose of it, the head bit him on the hand. "He had to rip it off". "He had to have 26 doses".

The man is recovering in a hospital, the story said.

"Within two miles down the road, he was going through seizures, slipping out of conscious and couldn't see". Jennifer said she was pulling weeds in her garden when she came across a four-foot western diamondback rattlesnake hiding in the flowers.

Jeremy Sutcliffe, 40, had to be administered with 26 doses of antivenom to try and keep him alive, having slipped into a coma when the severed head bit him.

Leslie Boyer, an anti-venom doctor at the University of Arizona VIPER Institute, in an interview to Gizmodo warned against cutting up snakes.

If you're bitten by a rattlesnake, don't attempt to suck out the venom. Doctors told Sutcliffe her husband might not make it, even after giving him vast amounts of anti-venom. Trauma surgeon Michael Halpert said although dying from a snake bite is rare, it happens.

Her husband is now in stable condition but is suffering from weak kidney functions, Sutcliffe said.

She said her husband has thought about that Sunday morning and talks about wishing he could go back and do just one thing differently. And naturally, they become aggressive in the throes of death, when they perceive the situation as a last-ditch opportunity to survive.

"It's a common thing for people to grab a shovel and cut off their heads or whatever", she said.
