Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, said she can't hit serves because of a problem with her right pectoral muscle.

Williams admitted she now faces a race against time in order to be fit for the grass court season and Wimbledon.

Williams' return to the French Open was a stunning comeback, after she gave birth to a daughter previous year and suffered from blood clots and postpartum complications that made for a hard recovery. "I gave up so much, from the time with my daughter and time with my family".

"Just try to think of the bigger picture, hopefully the next event, and the rest of the year".
