Top Republicans break with Trump over Federal Bureau of Investigation confidential source

  • Speaker Ryan Dismisses Trump’s Charges of a Spy in his Campaign

Gohmert didn't provide any evidence, and wasn't in the briefing with Gowdy and Ryan, but argued that unfounded allegations of spies infiltrating the Trump campaign is the latest indication a second special counsel is needed.

Ryan said he agreed with that initial assessment but added: "We have some more digging to do".

Ryan made his comments Thursday after being asked whether he supports requests from some House Republicans for DOJ to turn over more documents to Congress about the ongoing Russian Federation investigation and its 2016 investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of State.

Gaetz hinted during the interview that some of the more conservative members of the GOP conference whispered Wednesday of revolt against Ryan over his comments. "As chairman Nunes said just the other day, if we had the information we were looking for, we could wrap this up faster".

The Senate Intelligence Committee, which has been operating in a much more bipartisan way, is still conducting its investigation of Russian meddling in the presidential election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., who has floated the possibility of impeaching Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller's probe, declined to comment on Ryan's take until after he had spoken directly with the speaker. He went on to concede that although he does not know the "technical" answer to the question of whether a president can self-pardon, Trump "obviously" shouldn't do so.

"Undercover informant, confidential informant, those are all words I'm familiar with, I've never heard the term spy used", he said, when asked about the president's repeated use of the word "spy".

Although members of Congress including Ryan and House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., say they have seen no suggestion about any impropriety, Trump has continued to attack the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. But three top Republicans who attended classified briefings on the subject last month, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, have said there was no evidence of a political spy.

Trump has maintained, without publicly presenting evidence, that former President Barack Obama imbedded a "spy" into his campaign, dubbing the alleged incident "Spygate". During a press briefing last week, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders responded to Gowdy's comments by saying "clearly, there's still cause for concern that needs to be looked at".

Trump recently said he has the "absolute right" to pardon himself if it were necessary - which Trump says it won't be, because "I have done nothing wrong". "Legally, I don't know".

On Sunday, Giuliani said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that it would be "unthinkable" for Trump to pardon himself - but that it was something the president could "probably" do - because it would nearly certainly lead to impeachment proceedings in Congress.
