  • Rudy Giuliani: President Trump could pardon himself, but he probably wouldn’t

Trump claimed Monday that he has "the absolute right to pardon myself", as Special Counsel Robert Mueller's year-long probe continues into possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 election campaign, as well as possible obstruction of justice.

The president has claimed this week that he has - quote - "an absolute right" to do so, but he said he has done nothing wrong, and so there is no need for a pardon.

During an appearance on ABC's This Week programme, Mr Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani said there was nothing in the US Constitution to suggest that Mr Trump could not pardon himself if he wanted to. "That's not what the American people, I think, would be able to stand for".

President Donald Trump says he wants to know "what is taking so long" with an internal Justice Department probe expected to criticize the Federal Bureau of Investigation and its handling of the case involving Democrat Hillary Clinton's private email server. "I don't know how you can indict while he's in office".

Giuliani, who has been serving as Mr. Trump's lawyer amid the Russian Federation scandal, says Wednesday in Israel that Mueller's team includes "13 highly partisan Democrats".

"The president is not saying he is going to pardon himself".

Additionally, they asked McGahn if he'd spoken with Trump about any individuals who are under consideration for a pardon, or if he'd consulted with the president about any of the five individuals who already received pardons.

It's the latest salvo from Trump in his bid to discredit the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert Mueller. "No matter what it is", he told the website on Sunday, adding that impeachment was the only way Trump could be prosecuted. "Despite that, we play the game because I, unlike the Democrats, have done nothing wrong!" - he initially wrote.

Giuliani said during an appearance on CNN that "it was a mistake" and rejected the idea that it was a lie.

Trump's legal team is making clear that it will combat any effort to force the president to testify in front of a grand jury.

The Constitution is silent on the issue of whether the president's broad power to grant pardons extends to himself, and some lawyers say that supports Trump's position.

The comments come after The New York Times published a 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller by Trump attorney Jay Sekulow and then-Trump lawyer John Dowd. He is also looking into whether Trump tried to obstruct the investigation. The President has never said he pardoned himself.

On June 4, President Trump tweeted he has "the absolute right" to pardon himself but added that he has "done nothing wrong".
