Trump says no new North Korea sanctions

  • North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol arrives at a hotel in New York U.S

"We are going to deal and we are really going to start a process", Trump told reporters on Friday.

It may also be that the strong sanctions being applied against North Korea (to which, for a change, China and Russian Federation seem to at least be paying lip service) is beginning to negatively affect North Korea.

"It seems as if the road to a North Korea-U.S. summit has become enhanced and expanded", Kim Eui-kyeom, a Seoul government spokesperson, said in a statement hours after Trump had made his announcement.

The president teased reporters about the contents of the letter, saying, "That letter was a very nice letter".

The White House released photos of its delivery, and this isn't just any ordinary letter. That means Trump needs to get something tangible out of a summit that will draw intense global scrutiny, analysts said. But cut to the next day, he met a North Korean official at the White House and pointed out that the summit was back on track. A pair of US delegations have held talks this week with their North Korean counterparts at the Korean demilitarized zone and in Singapore.

And part of Kim Yong Chol's mission was to hand-deliver a letter from the North Korea leader.

Ahead of the talks, the South Korean side said it planned to use the meeting to reduce tensions across the heavily-armed border and talks to engage with the Red Cross to resume family reunions for people separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

Friday's talks were led by South Korea's Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon and Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the North's committee for the peaceful reunification of the country, and were a follow-up to an agreement reached during the first summit between Kim and Moon in April.

Kim Yong Chol was greeted at the White House by chief of staff John Kelly and then whisked into the Oval Office. The two men will meet in Singapore in 10 days as the president tries to convince Kim to give up nuclear weapons.

Lava has continued to spew and mass evacuations have been ordered in a desperate attempt to prevent injuries. In a community meeting Wednesday, Kim said the order was necessary to keep people safe.

"He'd like to see it happen".

Both countries have faced global isolation, North Korea over its nuclear weapons programme, and Syria over its tactics during its bloody civil war.

"Good working dinner with Kim Yong Chol in NY tonight", Pompeo tweeted.

As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sat down in a NY apartment for talks with the North Korean leader's right-hand man, Kim Yong Chol, back in Washington Trump expressed optimism.

Yet he also said hard work remains including hurdles that may appear to be insurmountable as negotiations progress on the United States demand for North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation. "And we talked about sanctions", he said.

Despite the upbeat messaging in the United States, Kim Jong Un, in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister on Thursday, complained about the USA trying to spread its influence in the region, a comment that may complicate the summit. "I'm confident we're moving in the right direction".

But that unread letter from Kim also symbolizes the unanswered questions about the June 12 summit in Singapore: Is North Korea serious about giving up its nuclear arsenal?

Trump says after an Oval Office meeting Friday with North Korea's Kim Yong Chol that he'd be making a mistake not to go forward with the on-again, off-again nuclear summit in Singapore.
