Trump talks tough on trade ahead of G7 meetings in Canada

  • Washington apple farmers brace for impact after Mexico imposes tariffs on U.S. imports

When Trump invoked new tariffs on aluminum and steel imports to the US and said the current trade climate poses a "national security threat" to his country, he stunned not only the worldwide community and American allies, but members of his own government.

In another interesting development, Donald Trump, in a telephonic conversation with Canadian PM Trudeau on May 25, over new trade tariffs imposed by USA administration targeting aluminum imports from Canada, made erroneous historical reference.

Just before he headed to the G7 summit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a stop in the heart of Canada's aluminum country - where he repeated his pledge to try to convince Donald Trump that his heavy-handed tariff strategy is a big mistake.

Trudeau has publicly denounced the "national security" justification for the new tariffs.

While referring to the upcoming G7 Summit, Justin Trudeau told reporters, "We know certainly that there will be frank and sometimes hard discussions around G7 table, particularly with the U.S. president on tariffs".

Trump's tariffs targeted G7 allies under a section of US trade law that justifies the action on the basis of national security - a characterization that Trudeau and others have vigorously rejected.

The Trump administration levies are aimed at pressuring Mexico and Canada to accept White House demands for revising the North American Free Trade Agreement. "I think we're really close to a deal there, but there are some of the revisions, such as the five-year sunset clause, were the most hard to negotiate".

"[It was a joke] to the degree one can ever take what is said as a joke", the unnamed source said, "The impact on Canada and ultimately on workers in the U.S. won't be a laughing matter". Bob Corker, the official said.

"We have, on various occasions, heard the president speak about his interest or his musings about a bilateral deal instead of the trilateral NAFTA that we have", Sputnik quoted Trudeau as saying. "We think that demonstrating the strength of NAFTA as a solid community as we take on the world is very much in all three of our advantages, and we're going to continue to negotiate that way".

"Tariffs are a wake-up call", Kudlow said in a First on FOX Business interview on Wednesday.

The new tariffs could also have political implications in some hotly contested races as the Republicans seek to maintain control of both chambers in Congress in November's election, illustrating the potential perils of Trump's aggressive efforts to set right what he sees as unfair trade balances with allies and rivals. And tariffs are simply one more tool in the president's toolbox when it comes to repairing it. "So that we may have disagreements, we may have tactical disagreements, but he has always said - and I agree - tariffs are a tool in that effort". "People should realize how serious he is in that respect", said Kudlow.

"The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be", Macron said in another tweet.

Canada's non-American G7 partners don't envy Trudeau; some are downright sympathetic. In fact, Canada wasn't even a country until 1867.

That the United States is sparring with the state's top trading partners is worrisome, said Josh Rolph, federal policy manager for the California Farm Bureau Federation.

Trump is no fan of multilateralism.
